its a 1995 a4 z28 w/79,400miles
Well i was in Sac today, got off the freeway and pulled a u-turn got on it a little bit and there was a bad ass thump from 1st to 2nd.....ah it felt like i ran something over with the back right tire. I kept driving it and didn't run it hard at all and the shifts were fine. I drove for another hour or so home, and in Fairfield i tried to recreate the phenomena (but with less accelleration) and had a less hard thump, but it felt like it was centered underneath the shifter. Just wanna get some ideas, what anyone thinks, i'll probably be bringing it in somewhere sometime soon, and try not to ignore the problem.

It's a broken tranny mount!
Let me guess... it hapens only when you get on it, and is very noticeable between hard shift, specially 1-2 and 2-3.
Well that's the tranny mount.
Go grab a 1LE tranny mount, should be less then $30 then lift the car go under it and undo the 4 bolts that hold the black coated bar that seats right under the tranny (and your shifter).
take the bar off and you'll see the trannymount, replace it. bolt it back, and voila.
15min, if you're mechanically challenged.

if it IS the tranny mouynt, you won't hurt much driving it really really smooth (not eharing that thump).
But I'd do it ASAP, it's a no brainer.

is there really a chance of the tranny droping?
It's still attached to the engine, and to teh driveshaft right?
I don't know if you were J/K
:D
If there's a risk of that hapening, at least make sure you got a buddy arround.

Take a wooden block and put it on top of the jack and support the tranny from the rear of the oil pan or just somewhere near the tailshaft area. I doubt you'd want TREMEC imprinted on your forehead... ;)

Well, i took a looksy under the car and from a limited mechanical visual inspection i've got enough evidence to buy a 1LE tranny mount. The current mount looks like it has tears in the plastic "bushing" and the replacement seems reallly easy, i'll be sure to have Scatch manning the jack to keep the tremec logo offa my skull. Thanks for your help guys (well once i get the new one on and give it some gas, then i'll be thankful).
